The Tar Hog Nexus is one of the worst creatures of Hoxxes. This disgusting, vile creature lays motionless in the depths of the Magma Core, seemingly attracted by the warmth. It is awoken only by the movement of potential prey nearby, which it attacks by spewing black superheated tar at. Thankfully, the horrible stench of sweat and car tyres it emits serves as an effective early warning system to miners in the proximity of this creature, spreading out into the caves around it.
— Miner's Manual Description

The Tar Hog Nexus is a stationary Creature found on Hoxxes. It is the only member of the Tar Hog family and typically spawns in large, open caves, spawning on cave generation. It originally was found only in the Magma Core, but with the release of Season 6: Corporate Expansion also spawns in the new Desolate Hollows, and has a new, unique variant for the Cerulean Cove biome, called the Cerulean Swine Nexus. Upon entering a 50 metre spherical radius around the tar hog, a dwarf will usually say a voice line, which can warn you in advance one lies nearby before it gets aggro’s.

Combat[]

The Tar Hog Nexus will spew globules of hot damaging tar towards its enemies, which behave very similar to the projectiles of the Glyphid Septic Spreader. However, these projectiles will also cause slowdown and heat up anything in the pool left behind.

The Tar Hog Nexus’ possess 2 eyes that, unlike regular weakpoints, are breakable. They have a fixed, non-scaling health of 300 and can only be damaged directly (i.e. not by Area Damage). Upon dealing 300 or more damage to an eye, it will explode, dealing 300 damage to the Nexus.

The Cerulean Swine Nexus variant found in the Cerulean Cove has identical health stats to the standard version, but its globules will deal no damage; instead, its attacks will instantly freeze any dwarf they hit. Coupled with the fact that the projectiles still leave pools of slowing goo on the floor like the standard variant, the Cerulean Swine can be very dangerous despite its lack of directly damaging attacks due to the risk of getting overwhelmed by other enemies while frozen and slowed.

Trivia[]

  • Both the Miner’s Manual and one of the Dwarf voice lines state the Tar Hog Nexus smells strongly of “sweat” and “tyres”. Coupled with its black, rubbery appearance, it seems the creature has evolved a latex exoskeleton, to protect it either from the local heat of its home biome, the Magma Core, or other predators.
  • The Tar Hog Nexus was introduced in Season 05: Drilling Deeper.
