The hoverboard is a retro dream. Toss it out and jump on for a quick getaway. Hovering just over the ground, most glyphids will not be able to reach you, while also freeing your hands. The hover capabilities do come at a cost, making it more difficult to stay balanced or reach high places, though with enough practice you can still get anywhere you want.
— Item Description

The Hover Board is a Utility Tool for the Scout. It is a deployable skateboard-esque hovering platform that anybody can stand on, not necessarily the scout to which it belongs to. The hoverboard has a faint yellow glow thanks to its dual hover motors located on the underside and the neon banding plastered over the main body.

When the hoverboard is deployed, it will automatically unfold mid-air for about a second. After it has unfolded, it will lower to the ground, waiting for any dwarf to step on it. Once a dwarf has stepped on the hoverboard, it will begin to float about 2 meters off the ground, and any movement controls will instead steer the hoverboard. Specifically, holding forward will accelerate with no speed limit, back will decelerate until the board has stopped moving, and left and right will steer the direction the hoverboard is facing. Jumping while "locked" to the ground will cause the hoverboard to jump up 3-7 meters depending on how fast you are moving, and jumping while midair will dismount the board, giving you an additional small height boost. Once dismounted, the board will spin off wildly momentarily, before folding back up and returning to its owner's inventory.

Slamming into a wall or falling on the ground too fast will cause the hoverboard to fail, making you take fall damage proportional to how fast you were moving. Since this can only happen while already moving fast, the damage you take will almost always be near fatal. Because of these limitations, jumping off the hoverboard just before impact will often mitigate most of the damage. All of this does make it significantly harder to go straight up, making the grapple hook more versatile in most cases, though a skilled scout will almost always perform better when using a hoverboard thanks to its speed and ability to fire while using one.

Any teammate riding a hoverboard that is not their own will have a maximum speed cap of approximately 5 meters per second, though all other modification bonuses and the ability to double jump will remain.

Unique Modifications[]

Down Thrusters[]

Down Thrusters lets you to stick to walls and ceilings for 2 seconds. While sticking, a specific sound cue is played, and similarly, when unstuck another sound cue is played to let you know when you fall. Sticking to a wall to ceiling required a relatively smooth ramp, or else you will just crash. The engineer's platforms specifically have a special interaction where you will never crash and always act like a ramp, even if otherwise you would've crashed.

Trivia[]

  • The hoverboard is a popular Sci-Fi concept, though the coloration makes it likely a reference to the Back to the Future franchise.
  • The hoverboard is one of the four secret unlockable traversal tools, requiring you to complete the Space Rig Dumpster Dive quest before using.
