The Glyphid Slasher is a more aggressive mutation of the Grunt, equipped with monstrously oversized claws and jaws capable of ripping through most armor and stunning even the hardiest of dwarves. Far more aggressive even than the Grunt, the Slasher is a terrifying opponent that should never be underestimated.
— Miner's Manual Description

The Glyphid Grunt Slasher is a hostile Creature and a variant of the normal Glyphid Grunt. While sharing a body shape, the Grunt Slasher is covered in sharp white growths, and possesses much longer forelimbs which have completely over-developed into razor sharp claws. Their mouths are also larger and lined with menacing teeth.

On top of moderate improvements to health and speed, they have extremely powerful melee attacks which deal high damage and can stun a Dwarf with their "Crippling Slash" attack, preventing sprinting and halving their movement speed for 1.5 seconds. It should be noted that despite being called "Crippling Slash," the slowdown effect will also occur from biting attacks.

Slashers deal 2.5x more damage than a standard Grunt. At this rate, a single attack breaks a player's shield absent of damage resistance, and between 4 and 5 attacks will down a player depending on their maximum health. However, Slashers share the armor and weaknesses of normal Grunts - their mouths are weakpoints. They also take increased damage from explosions.

Combat

Glyphid Grunt Slashers will usually spawn in by burrowing out of the ground. They prefer to attack in groups, usually accompanied by other Grunts and Glyphid Grunt Guards, as they are easily dispatched on their own.

They behave similarly to Glyphid Grunts, running straight at players to engage in melee combat. However, Slashers have better health and movement speed, this generally gives them better odds at closing the distance to a target. The Slasher's Crippling Slash attack and the slowdown it inflicts leaves a targeted Dwarf wide open to other enemies, such as Macteras. Slashers can repeatedly use their Crippling Slash to keep stunning a Dwarf. As such, maintaining a healthy distance from Slashers is critical to survival, especially during a Swarm. They should be considered a high priority target due to their ability to slow down Dwarves.

As a mere Grunt however, Slashers don't have exceptionally good defences and are easy enough to take out - especially alone. Their mouths are weakpoints, so aiming at their mouths at all times will ensure their deaths. Slashers also take 30% more damage from Explosions, so weapons with explosive properties are especially effective at taking them out. They also have light Armor adorning their body, Even so, it does little to protect them from concentrated fire.

Glacial Strata Variant

This regional variant of the Glyphid Grunt Slasher spawns exclusively in the Glacial Strata. It maintains the same body as a typical Slasher, but the majority of its body is a dark blue color while its abdomen is a lighter blue. The spikes on its forelegs and body have an icy appearance and their fangs are slightly purple in color.

These Slashers have the same statistics and behave identically to all other types of Slasher. However, they take 25% more Fire damage and resist 25% of all Ice damage.

Radioactive Exclusion Zone Variant

This regional variant of the Glyphid Grunt Slasher spawns exclusively in the Radioactive Exclusion Zone. It maintains the same body as a typical Slasher, but its body is a dark green color. Its foreleg claws and body spikes are a lighter green.

These Slashers have the same statistics and behave identically to all other types of Slasher. However, they resist 50% of all Radiation damage.

Tips

  • There are two perks which can help to mitigate the effects of the Crippling Slash attack:
    • Dash is an active perk triggered by double-tapping your Sprint key which doubles your move speed for 1.5 seconds. If you get hit by Crippling Slash, the Dash perk will let you easily escape and put some distance between you and the Slasher and any other enemies. Try to only keep Dash for emergency use though, as it has a 25-30 seconds cooldown.
    • Unstoppable is a passive perk which reduces the effect of slowdowns by up to 50%. Henceforth, you will be able to move at x0.75 your usual movement speed (but you still cannot sprint). While less useful at immediately getting away, Unstoppable's passive nature automatically takes most of the sting out of Crippling Slash's stunning effect so you can usually get away from the Slasher and its cohorts.
  • Slashers become particularly deadly on missions with the Lethal Enemies modifier, greatly reaping the benefits of increased melee damage. Stay far away from Slashers with this modifier active, especially on higher Hazard Levels, as just one blow will cut right through your Shield and deal significant Health damage.
  • Weapons with explosive projectiles are effective at shutting them down:
    • The Heavy Autocannon is a strong counter to Slashers, as its explosive rounds will deal considerable damage to them at a fast pace. The Autocannon can also be outfitted with a mod which gives each shot a chance to cause Fear in enemies, which can make Slashers flee if they manage to survive the gun's fire.
    • The Deepcore 40mm PGL's high burst damage will blow Slashers to bits, especially if they are caught at the center of the blast.
    • A great variety of Throwables such as the Sticky Grenade, the Cluster Grenade and the HE Grenade all deal great damage to Slashers.
  • Weapons with high base damage do well against Slashers when aiming for their mouth weakpoints. The M1000 Classic and the Heavy Revolver are both great choices; with certain modifications, they can usually kill a Slasher with one blow to their weakspot.
