The Glyphid Guard is a heavily armored mutation of the Grunt, its front limbs covered in dense layers of highly resistant chitin. While its attack is no more deadly than that of the common Grunt, the appearance of a Guard in a swarm should be handled with care - its less hardy brethren are smart enough to take cover behind it.
— Miner's Manual Description

Glyphid Grunt Guards are a stronger variant of the typical Glyphid Grunt. They have the same general body shape, but have a more prominent head structure, larger forelegs, and thicker armor. While normal Grunts simply charge their targets, Guards will attempt to protect themselves while attacking. Once targeted by a Dwarf, the Guard will use its large forelegs covered in thick armor to cover up its mouth weakpoint. Although the armor is more resilient than Grunt armor and stops more damage, the armor may still be broken through, exposing the unarmored white flesh of the creature. The Guard must also drop its defensive stance in order to attack.

Combat

Glyphid Guards will run straight towards players to engage in melee combat. When attacked, they will protect their mouth with their front legs, moving slower as a result but shielding themselves from frontal assaults. The legs will still prevent weakpoint shots from the front even if the armor is broken, but stunning the guard will drop their stance. They typically spawn in low numbers.

Guards have a high amount of armor and a substantial amount of health for their size, making them more difficult to kill compared to their brethren. They also sneak with their heavy armor front forelegs by blocking from attacks to protect themselves from getting killed.

Glacial Strata Variant

This frost variant of the Glyphid Grunt Guard which spawns exclusively in the Glacial Strata. It maintains the same body as a typical Grunt Guard, but the majority of its body is a dark blue color while its abdomen is a lighter blue. The spikes on its forelegs and body have an icy appearance and their fangs are slightly purple in color.

Attacks

These Grunt Guards have the same statistics and behave identically to all other types of Grunt Guards. However, they take 25% more Fire damage and resist 25% of all Ice damage.

Radioactive Exclusion Zone Variant

This irradiated variant of the Glyphid Grunt Guard spawns exclusively in the Radioactive Exclusion Zone. It maintains the same body as a typical Grunt Guard, but its body is a dark green color. Its foreleg claws and body spikes are also of a dull, darker green.

Attacks

These Grunt Guards have the same statistics and behave identically to all other types of Grunt Guards. However, they resist 50% of all Radiation damage.

Elite Variant

The Elite Glyphid Grunt Guard is the elite version of the regular Glyphid Grunt Guard. Like all Elite enemies, the Elite Glyphid Grunt Guard looks almost identical to its regular counterparts; being only distinguished by its aura of distinct vertical red lines with the words 'elite' above their healthbar when scanned and looked at.

Attacks

In addition to all the benefits that all Elite enemies receive, Elite Grunt Guards have two additional enhancements:

  • Their Armor is greatly increased. The front legs' Heavy Armor has its Armor Health increased from 60 to 350, and the rest of the Light Armor that covers the body has its Armor Strength increased from 15 to 350. The Light Armor still only reduces incoming Direct Damage by -20%.
  • Their melee attacks have a bonus knockback, adding 3 m/sec horizontal impulse and 3 m/sec vertical impulse.
