At least one of our xenogeologists quit in a rage when research started on this region. Instead of having conventional polar ice caps, and in violation of all physical laws we know of, the continental plates of Hoxxes rest on top of a planetwide permafrost layer several miles deep. As always, DRG recommends a "don't ask" approach when dealing with the peculiarities of Hoxxes' makeup.
— Ingame description

The Glacial Strata is one of the biomes of Hoxxes IV.

Hazards

The Glacial Strata will require temperature management to prevent freezing. When a dwarf's temperature meter reaches it's lowest (leftmost) point, the dwarf will "freeze" immobilizing the dwarf and forcing them into third person. Dwarves can unfreeze themselves by alternate mashing their move left and right keys, but it is much slower than two subsequent hits from a teammate's pickaxe.

The Glacial Strata are home to quite a few unique hazards which can leave an unprepared miner trapped or downed at a moments notice.

  • Green stalactites of Unstable Ice will, if disturbed by an explosions, shots, or other stalactites falling, fall on players or glyphids.
  • Crevasses may open up under areas that players recently passed over, possibly temporarily trapping less mobile dwarfs.
  • Ice vents blowing cold air will rapidly drop a dwarf's temperature meter.
  • Black ice will cause the player to slip around, resulting in a reduced ability to stop and reverse direction.
  • Heavy snow will impede the player's movement, preventing them from running in it. It does, however, prevent fall damage when landed on.
  • Blizzards, similar to the Sandstorms, impede the players movement by slowing them and reduce visibility. Blizzards also gradually deplete the temperature meter, freezing dwarves if no heat source is found.

Enemies

Several enemies have a unique ice-themed variation that appears instead of their regular counterpart. Their attacks are also affected, e.g. Ice Praetorians spew frost that can freeze dwarfs instead of damaging acid.

Vegetation

Caves are often lined with Platform Plants and Explosive Ice Plants. Occasionally a?small oasis of vegetation can be found growing near heat vents.

  • Platform Plants are green bulbs that when provoked enough will explode into a similarly green horizontal platform. These platforms require two hits to mine and are otherwise unremarkable.
  • Ice Plants are blue bulbs that when provoked enough will explode kicking up a lot of snow in a vertical fashion. The Ice Plant's explosion will severely drop any dwarf's temperature within range as well as freeze any nearby glyphids.
  • Small areas of red plants can occasionally be found in the Glacial Strata growing around a heat vent that can raise a dwarf's temperature meter.

Ores

As with every biome, some of the resources which can be found in the Glacial Strata are determined by the mission type, such as Morkite, Aquarq or Hollomite. The crafting materials found in the Magma Core are Magnite Magnite and Umanite Umanite, with Magnite being abundant, and Umanite being scarce.
