~ Item Description

The Flare Gun is a Support Tool for the Scout. It is an oversized bright yellow flare launcher, which fires specialized flares that stick into walls. The Scout reloads the tool by lifting the top barrel open and placing the flares inside, similar to a crossbow.

Flares fired by the Flare Gun are much more powerful than the standard ones thrown by all Dwarves. They burn brighter and last longer, up to 75 seconds by default. As mentioned earlier, they can also stick into surfaces like the walls and ceilings if fired directly at them. However if the angle is too extreme or the terrain supporting the flare is destroyed, it will fall out and roll about on the floor.

An essential tool for visibility and safety, the Flare Gun is the most important item in the Scout's arsenal. Nothing else available to the team is as effective at illuminating caves as the Flare Gun is, so Scouts should always be looking to light up caverns where the standard thrown flares won't suffice. The light from the flare gun obviously allows players to see through the darkness, but it can also expose resources and hazards. It is particularly effective at revealing the positions of Cave Leeches. In conjunction with the Grappling Hook, the Scout can get to typically inaccessible areas to mark resources. This helps the Engineer to place platforms on resources that are too high to reach and enable the Scout to gather said resources. Scouts can also illuminate the immediate area when a Swarm is announced, helping himself and his team to see enemies better.

Although the usefulness of the Flare Gun cannot be overstated, it is limited by a relatively low reserve ammo count. This can be remedied by modifications to an extent, but it requires the Scout to carefully consider where and when to place his flares. While it can also deal damage to enemies, using it as a weapon is not advised due to the low damage and waste of valuable flares.
