R&D reports sightings of these giant structures above our new Rival's data vaults, hidden behind a giant impenetrable shield. The few miners who have returned alive report that the structure is the Facility Caretaker, an extremely dangerous machine that furiously protects the valuable data hidden underneath it. Bring your strongest arsenal for this beast!
— Miner's Manual Description

The Caretaker is a sentient construct which exists to protect a Data Rack. Stealing the data rack is the main objective in Industrial Sabotage.

The Caretaker appears to be a floating upside-down pyramid. It has four intakes on its top corners and a closed eye on each of its sideways faces. It will lie in a dormant state until its shielding is brought down.

Combat[]

The Caretaker's health bar is split into 3 segments, each signifying a different phase of the fight. Upon activating the Caretaker and initiating combat, it will reveal 4 destructible intakes on the top of its body, which must be destroyed in order to allow damage to its main health pool. The Caretaker will slowly rotate during this stage, spinning faster with each intake destroyed. During this stage, the Caretaker will periodically summon clusters of Patrol Bots and Robotic Appendages to fight off the Dwarves. Standing on the vault underneath the Caretaker will also cause it to deploy an electric shock, damaging any dwarves nearby. In addition, the Caretaker will deploy large plasma barriers akin to a Repulsion Turret, which will slowly move outward, damaging and pushing back dwarves on contact while also blocking projectiles.

Once all 4 intakes are destroyed, the Caretaker will open one of the four eyes on its sides, allowing the dwarves to deal damage to it. The open eye will shut after enough damage is dealt or enough time has passed, and another will open shortly thereafter. All of the Caretaker's normal attacks will continue during this time. This process will repeat until one of the segments of its health bar has been depleted, at which point the destructible intakes will reappear and a new phase will begin.

Upon starting a new phase of the fight, the Caretaker will add a new attack to its arsenal, selected at random from a pre-determined pool; this includes summoning Sniper Turrets which will fly up and attach to the ceiling, summoning swarms of Shredders, or deploying phase bombs, which will teleport to the dwarves, appearing nearby and exploding after a short animation.

When the Caretaker is defeated, all other Rival Tech enemies will immediately explode, and the Caretaker itself will fall to the ground. After a few seconds, it will also detonate, launching any dwarves nearby a fair distance. The vault below it will open, revealing the data rack, which can then be deposited into the M.U.L.E, allowing the Drop Pod to be called.

Robotic Appendage[]

The Robotic Appendage is a special Rival Tech construct that can only be spawned by the Caretaker. It has the ability to fire several projectiles at dwarves like the Burst Turret while moving its "head" around to dodge return fire. It can also occasionally very quickly lunge and embed itself in the terrain in an attempt to attack players. Robotic Appendages are generally spawned on the 4 raised cylinders of the Caretaker's platform, but will burrow to players who stay out of the Caretaker's range for too long, and spawn on nearby terrain instead.

Trivia[]

  • The batteries from the force field generator, which protects the Caretaker, can be picked up and damaged to create a small and weak explosion.
  • The large orange bubble shield that guards the Caretaker before the generators are destroyed cannot be stood on, as it will damage and bounce players off.
